NYC High School Admissions Changes

1/17/2021

High school applications open the week of January 18, 2021, with the deadline to apply coming during the week of February 22, 2021.

The SHSAT, the entrance exam that determines admission to eight of the city's nine specialized high schools, will be administered to students in their local middle schools, though parents will need to register their children. Registration for that opens Monday, December 21, 2020, and closes Friday, January 15, 2021.

Unlike middle schools, high school's geographic admissions priorities are being phased out over a two-year period. For this admission cycle, district priorities have been eliminated; geographic priorities, like borough residency requirements, can still be utilized but will be eliminated in the 2022-23 admissions cycle.
High schools can also rely on admission screens, utilizing a combination of 2018-19 test scores, previous years' grades, or other measures determined by each school. Schools must post their full admissions rubric online.

Auditions for performing arts high schools have shifted online, too. Students can produce one audition piece to submit to multiple schools.

How to Apply to NYC's Public Schools
All families must set up a MySchools Account to process applications, whether applying to 3K or high school or any grade in between. Questions about the process can be addressed by your child's current school, by reaching out to the Family Welcome Center in your home district, or by calling 311.

NYC Middle School Admissions Changes

1/10/2021

The middle school application opens the week of January 11, 2021, and closes the week of February 8, 2021. While middle schools can provide geographic priority for in-district students to keep younger kids closer to home, all other admissions priorities must be dropped for this admissions cycle. Schools with more applications than available seats will utilize a lottery system to determine which students receive offers.
The removal of screens will be reevaluated prior to the next admissions cycle and affects 196 schools citywide that use some sort of screening in their admissions process.

By Anna Fader MommyPoppins
1. Best All-Around: Mountain Creek – Vernon, New Jersey
2021 update: You have to buy your tickets (for skiing and snow tubing), lessons, and book rental equipment ahead of time online; there will be no tickets sold at the mountain. Other safety precautions include mask requirements, putting on your gear in the parking lot, and maintaining six feet of distance on lifts.

2. Closest to NYC: Campgaw Mountain – Mahwah, New Jersey
2021 update: A health form—which can be printed on its website—has to be filled out before you can enter. All guests must have their temperature taken. Tickets can also be purchased online ahead of time.

3. Best Ski School: Windham Mountain – Windham, New York
2021 update: Group lessons are being held for kids ages 7-12, while younger children must go the private lesson route—and reservations must be made online ahead of time. There is no daycare program this year. Other safety precautions include social distancing and mask requirements. Lodge capacity has been cut in half.

4. Best for Beginners: Mount Peter – Warwick, New York
2021 update: Tickets must be purchased ahead of time, and there are mask and other COVID-19 requirements in place. Its ski team program is substantially limited this season.

5. Best Bargain: Belleayre – Highmount, New York
2021 update: Like other places, tickets, lessons, and rentals have to be bought and/or booked online before you head to the mountain—and currently, only weekdays are available. Masks are required, and there is no childcare this year.

6. Best All-Inclusive: Rocking Horse Ranch – Highland, New York
2021 update: The kid’s program and childcare are currently closed. Other safety protocols, like mask requirements and social distancing, are in place. The resort also recently installed a new air purification system.

7. Best for Non-Skiers: Camelback Mountain – Tannersville, Pennsylvania
2021 update: For skiing, tickets and rentals have to be purchased in advance. Other precautions are in place, like mask wearing, additional sanitizing, and social distancing.

8. Best for a Weekend Escape: Split Rock Resort – Lake Harmony, Pennsylvania
2021 update: The hotel’s water park reopens on January 15, but the nearby Jack Frost/Big Boulder ski resort is currently open, and lift tickets should be booked in advance.

9. Best via Public Transportation: Thunder Ridge – Patterson, New York
2021 update: The shuttle will not be in operation this season because of COVID-19 restrictions. But you can catch Metro-North to the Patterson station, then take a cab or Uber to the resort.

Anger Management for Kids: 7 Healthy Ways to Deal with Explosive Feelings

1/7/2021

How Parents Can Teach Anger Management for Kids

1. Identify what’s causing the anger and give it a “voice” for your child

Kids, especially young ones, can struggle when it comes to expressing their feelings with language, says Dr. Cook. This in turn can cause fear, panic and (you guessed it) more anger. Although adults might not take too kindly to someone else labeling their experience for them, this is absolutely an acceptable approach with children. “Labeling and explaining to your child what you believe they may be experiencing is important because it validates their experience and also teaches them not to be afraid of their feelings,” she says. Let’s say, for example, you notice that your 5-year-old is putting together a new jigsaw puzzle when suddenly pieces start flying and tortured screams ensue. You might try an insightful question to the tune of: “Are you feeling frustrated because you couldn’t figure out which piece went here? I’ve felt frustrated like that many times before...Can I help?” If you follow a similar script, Dr. Cook says your child will take comfort in knowing that it’s not just them—you’ve felt that way before and there’s a word for it, too.
